Description
Aquilegia formosa is a delicate herbaceous perennial native to western North America, admired for its nodding red-and-yellow flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. Its foliage is finely divided and lobed, with the classic columbine shape—soft green and attractive from early growth through the season. Plants form loose clumps 18–36 inches tall, with slender stems that hold the distinctive spurred flowers above the leaves. Thriving in moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, it’s well-suited to woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized plantings. Though short-lived, it self-seeds modestly, weaving itself gently into the landscape without becoming aggressive.
