Description
Paeonia obovata subsp. japonica is a woodland peony native to Japan and Korea, slow to establish but well worth the wait. Its divided foliage emerges in early spring with a reddish-bronze tint before maturing to green, forming a tidy clump that holds through the season. Flowers are typically mid-pink, nodding gently above the leaves, though white forms may appear. Bloom is brief, but the seed capsules that follow are a highlight: when ripe, they split to reveal glossy black seeds set against vivid scarlet arils, a display some consider more striking than the flower itself. Well-suited to moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade, it rewards patience with quiet drama and late-season interest.
