Description
Deinanthe bifida is a refined herbaceous perennial native to the cool, mountainous woodlands of Japan, valued for its soft coloration and textural elegance. Emerging in spring, its broad, bifid leaves (split into two lobes) unfurl with a rough, slightly fuzzy leaf and gently serrated edges, forming a lush, low mound that anchors the shade garden with quiet presence. By midsummer, nodding clusters of pale pink, almost white hydrangea-like flowers appear on slender stems, offering a delicate contrast to the bold foliage. Preferring moist, humus-rich soil and dappled shade, D. bifida thrives in woodland borders, understory plantings. Germination is slow and erratic, often requiring extended cold stratification and patience from the grower. But once established, this plant rewards with dependable summer bloom and foliage that remains attractive well into autumn.
