Skill Level: Beginner – Intermediate
Stachyurus salicifolia is an elegant, species native to the cloud forests of western China. In the garden it forms an airy, arching shrub—typically 6–10 ft. tall—with long, willow-like, evergreen leaves that give it a refined, almost bamboo presence. The foliage is especially beautiful: each leaf is finely tapered, lightly glossy, and flushed with a soft red tinge, set against slender red stems that glow in angled light.
It thrives in partial shade to bright, filtered light, preferring humus rich, moisture retentive but well drained soil. Consistent moisture is appreciated, especially in summer. Hardy in USDA Zones 7–9, it benefits from shelter from cold winter winds to protect the evergreen leaves.
Blooming begins in very early spring, often before many shrubs have stirred. Long, dangling racemes of soft yellow, bell shaped flowers hang from the bare stems—delicate, luminous, and unmistakably elegant. Once flowering finishes, the evergreen foliage carries the plant beautifully through the rest of the year.
Our Seed Germination Experience
Seeds are tiny and respond well to a small seed sowing technique: surface sown or barely covered, with gentle, even moisture. Ours germinated in three weeks at room temperature last April. The seedling has grown steadily and is now large enough to plant in the garden.
