Skill Level: Beginner
Liatris ligulistylis—Meadow Blazing Star—is a standout prairie perennial and a magnet for monarch butterflies. Unlike the tidy, bottlebrush spikes of common liatris species, this one carries loose, fluffy, rosy purple blooms that open in clusters along the stem. Each flower is more starburst than spike, giving the plant a softer, more animated look
Plants reach 3–5 ft tall and 1–2 ft wide, thriving in full sun and absolutely requiring perfect drainage – this is proven by experience. Heavy or wet soils will take it down quickly. Hardy in zones 3–8, it’s long lived once established in prairie-like conditions.
Our Seed Germination Experience
In our experience, seeds under 12 months old germinate at 4°C in about 3 weeks. Older seed may be less reliable, but results are not yet clear. Contrary to many sites, we have not found any need for a warm period after cold stratification. Seeds germinated at colder temperatures. Seed grown plants may bloom late in their first year if started early. It’s safest to expect bloom in year two.
Monarchs don’t just visit L. ligulistylis—they swarm it, often treating a single plant like a fueling station. It is ideal for gardeners wanting a touch of prairie wildness—and the wildlife to go with it.
