Skill Level: Beginner – Intermediate
Dierama reynoldsii is a graceful, small statured angel’s fishing rod from the high Drakensberg of South Africa, where it grows in cool, moist montane grasslands. In the garden it forms a tidy clump of fine, evergreen leaves, sending up slender, arching stems that carry soft pink, bell shaped flowers in midsummer. Plants typically reach 3–4 ft tall and about 2 ft wide, preferring full sun and demand sharply drained soil with steady moisture during the growing season. Hardy to roughly Zone 7 with protection, it performs best where winters are cool and summers are mild rather than scorching. Protect from winter wet where possible.
Our Seed Germination Experience
A true beginner level seed. Dierama reynoldsii germinates reliably at normal room temperatures, with seedlings appearing within about 30 days. Germination rates range between 60%-80% from seeds sown fresh or stored dry for up to 2-3 years. No stratification or pretreatment is required. Seedlings grow steadily, forming their first small corms by the end of their second season.
Plants grown from seed generally bloom in their third or fourth year, depending on climate, soil, and how early they were started. Once established, D. reynoldsii becomes a long lived, quietly dramatic presence, its flowers swinging and shimmering with every breeze.
