Description

Echinops ritro ‘Veitch’s Blue’ is a striking herbaceous perennial native to dry, rocky slopes across southern and central Europe, celebrated for its architectural form and steely blue inflorescences. In late spring, deeply lobed, spiny, grey-green leaves emerge with a coarse texture and silvery undersides, forming upright clumps that lend structure to sunny borders. By midsummer, sturdy stems rise above the foliage bearing spherical flower heads in vivid violet-blue, each composed of hundreds of tiny florets that attract bees and butterflies in abundance. The perfectly round seedheads persist well into winter, extending the plant’s seasonal interest. While often noted for its performance in dry, rocky soils, it is also tolerant of average garden conditions, provided drainage is adequate. Thriving in full sun, it’s ideal for xeriscapes, pollinator gardens, and naturalistic plantings. Germination is generally reliable with light exposure and minimal disturbance, and once established, this cultivar offers years of low-maintenance drama with excellent performance in fresh or dried arrangements.
