Description
| Viola elatior, commonly known as tall violet, is a refined herbaceous perennial native to the moist meadows, riverbanks, and light woodland openings of central and eastern Europe. In its wild habitat, it grows in cool, humus-rich soils where surrounding grasses offer light support. In spring, upright stems emerge clothed in narrow, lance-shaped green leaves, rising with a tall, slender habit far more poised and restrained than typical ground-hugging violets. From late spring into early summer, soft lavender-violet blooms open along the stems, bringing a delicate vertical structure and charm to shady spots. Highly adaptable, it thrives in bright dappled shade to morning sun in moist, fertile soils, but easily handles average garden in full sun as long as soil remains reasonably damp. Its unusually tall habit, non-aggressive growth, and deer resistance make it an exceptional choice for woodland edges, cottage beds, and naturalized meadow borders. Once established, expect some gentle reseeding. |
