Description
Veratrum nigrum is a slow-to-establish perennial native to Central Europe and temperate Asia, rewarding patience with bold, pleated foliage and dramatic summer bloom. Its broad, heavily ribbed leaves emerge in spring with a deep green sheen, forming a lush, architectural base that holds visual weight even without flowers. In good years, upright stems rise to five feet, bearing narrow spires of dusky purple-black flowers that open gradually from bottom to top. It prefers moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade and benefits from consistent moisture. Flowering is irregular—some seasons it may remain vegetative—but the foliage alone earns its place in the border, offering structure and contrast from spring through fall.
