Description

Triteleia laxa, commonly known as Ithuriel’s Spear, is a cormous perennial native to the grasslands, open forests, and foothill woodlands of northern California and southern Oregon. In late spring to early summer, it sends up slender, leafless stems topped with loose umbels of star-shaped, blue to violet flowers—each bloom opening into a sharply pointed six-petaled star that glows in the sunlight. The basal foliage, long and grass-like, emerges in late winter and dies back as the flowers appear, allowing the floral display to take center stage. Triteleia laxa thrives in full sun to part shade and is remarkably adaptable, tolerating clay soils and drought once established. It prefers well-drained, sandy or fertile soil and benefits from consistent moisture during its active growth period, followed by dry conditions after blooming. Easy to grow and virtually pest-free, it naturalizes readily and makes a graceful addition to rock gardens, borders, and wildflower plantings.
