Description
Salvia forsskaolei is a robust, herbaceous perennial native to the woodlands of the Balkans, admired for its generous basal foliage and late-summer floral display. In spring, large, heart-shaped leaves emerge in a soft green, forming a broad, low rosette that anchors the plant and remains attractive throughout the season. By midsummer, tall, branching stems rise above the foliage bearing loose whorls of violet-blue flowers, each delicately hooded and lightly veined, offering a gentle contrast to the bold leaves below. The bloom period lasts a generous 4 to 6 weeks, bringing sustained colour and movement to shaded borders and woodland edges. Thriving in moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, S. forsskaolei is well-suited to naturalistic plantings, where its long-lived basal clump provides texture and its airy flowers invite pollinators into the garden.
