Description
Phlomis russeliana, commonly known as Turkish sage or Jerusalem sage, is a bold and architectural perennial native to the open woodlands of Turkey and Syria. Distinguished by its textured, evergreen, heart-shaped gray-green foliage and upright stems, this plant produces whorled clusters of pale yellow, hooded flowers from early summer through late September. Rising above the basal leaves, each flower tier creates a striking vertical rhythm that draws in bees and other pollinators. As the season wanes, the blooms give way to dome-shaped seed heads that persist into winter, adding texture and visual interest even under frost. Thriving in full sun and well-drained, sandy soils, P. russeliana is remarkably drought-tolerant once established and spreads gently by rhizomes without becoming invasive. Its rugged charm and low-maintenance nature make it a standout in dry borders, cottage gardens, and wild landscapes where its year-round presence lends both structure and softness.
