Description
| Eryngium alpinum is a sculptural perennial native to alpine meadows of central Europe, admired for its evolving hues and architectural presence. Deeply lobed, leathery leaves emerge in spring as a rich green rosette, gradually developing a silvery-blue sheen that echoes the plant’s signature bracts. By midsummer, upright stems rise from this base, each tipped with a cone-shaped flower head surrounded by a starburst of metallic-blue bracts. Even after flowering, its rigid seed heads persist into winter, catching frost and low light with sculptural grace. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, E. alpinum is well-suited to gravel gardens, dry borders, and exposed sites where its form and color can shine. Though slow to germinate and sensitive to disturbance, it rewards patience with long-lasting beauty and a magnetic draw for pollinators. |
