Description
Dicentra formosa is a quietly enchanting spring perennial that slips into the garden early, makes its mark, and then gracefully bows out as summer arrives. Its soft, grey-green foliage adds a cool, smoky texture to the spring palette, forming low mounds that set the stage for arching stems of dusty pink, heart-shaped flowers. These blooms hover delicately above the leaves, offering a fleeting but lovely display before the plant goes summer dormant, retreating underground until the following year. Native to the Pacific Northwest and hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9, D. formosa thrives in partial to full shade and moist, humus-rich soil. Under ideal conditions, it self-seeds, forming informal colonies that weave through woodland borders and shaded beds. It’s especially beautiful when paired with ephemeral spring bulbs and low-growing groundcovers like Pulmonaria, Asarum europaeum, and Pachyphragma macrophyllum, which help fill the space as Dicentra quietly disappears for the season.
