| A slender burst of color in early summer, Dianthus cruentus—known as blood pink—sends up fine, upright stems topped with tight clusters of deep crimson to dark pink flowers. These airy spires rise through the heads of taller perennials, adding a vertical accent and a touch of contrast that enhances layered plantings. Native to southeastern Europe and western Asia, it thrives in full sun and well-drained, alkaline soil. However, it has proven much more adaptive in our garden setting by growing in part sun, heavier acidic clay soil. Its narrow, blue-green foliage forms a low clump that remains tidy throughout the season. Dianthus cruentus is valued for its long bloom time, ease of cultivation from seed, and subtle design impact in gravel gardens, borders, and naturalistic plantings. |
