Description
Clematis integrifolia is a meandering, herbaceous perennial native to central and eastern Europe, celebrated for its nodding, bell-shaped flowers and informal grace. Unlike its climbing relatives, this species forms a loose mound of lance-shaped green foliage, often leaning into neighboring plants for support. At Spirithouse Gardens, we let ours tumble through rosemary, amsonia or prop them gently with twiggy stakes, embracing their cottage-garden charm. From late spring into midsummer, arching stems carry solitary, violet-blue flowers with reflexed sepals that flutter in the breeze like small silk bells. Seed-grown specimen colours vary between white and dark purple. These blooms mature into silvery, feathered seed heads that shimmer well into autumn, offering textural contrast and seasonal continuity. Adaptable to a range of soils but happiest in well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline conditions, C. integrifolia thrives in full sun and rewards minimal care with a generous, pollinator-friendly display.
