Description
Allium victorialis is a robust, broad-leaved wild onion native to mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, where it has long been valued for both its ornamental and medicinal qualities. Emerging in early spring, its wide, glossy green leaves – unusual for a allium – form a lush clump, followed by tall stems bearing rounded umbels of creamy white flowers in late spring to early summer. Preferring moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, it brings a bold, architectural presence to woodland edges and damp meadows. Edible but pungent, it was once carried by alpine travelers as a protective charm; hence the name “victory onion.”
