Skill Level: Intermediate
Spiraea morrisonicola—a high mountain species from Taiwan—is a remarkably refined shrub, far more graceful than the familiar landscape spiraeas seen in parking lots and boulevards. Where common spiraeas tend toward dense, blocky forms and bright, sometimes brash flower clusters, S. morrisonicola carries itself with a lighter, more natural elegance. Its branching is airy, its leaves finer, and its early summer blooms gather in soft, cloudlike sprays of pink to white. The whole plant reads as poised rather than utilitarian, shaped by the cool ridgelines and misty forest margins of its native range.
Mature plants reach 1-2 ft., forming rounded, balanced mounds that suit woodland edges, mixed borders, and any garden that values subtlety. It prefers full sun to light shade with evenly moist, well drained soils, and is hardy to roughly USDA Zone 5. But true to genus, it is rather forgiving.
Our Seed Germination Experience
The seeds are extremely fine—almost dust—and respond best to a fine seed technique: sow on the surface of a firmed, moist medium, avoid covering, and maintain steady humidity. We set the pots outside in an unheated greenhouse in December, letting winter provide a natural cold period. After one month they were moved indoors to 16°C. Germination began within a week, quick and uniform once warmth returned. Seedlings are delicate at first but strengthen rapidly with bright light and careful watering.
