Podophyllum pleianthum

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Podophyllum pleianthum, often called The Giant, is one of the most commanding members of the Asian mayapple clan. Its glossy, umbrella like leaves unfurl in spring like lacquered shields, each one deep green, catching the light in a way that makes the whole plant look sculpted. Mature clumps reach 2–3 feet tall and nearly as wide. This is not a variety that spreads by rhizomes.

In late spring to early summer, clusters of dark maroon, waxy, pendant flowers appear beneath the canopy of leaves. The species is native to China in zones 6-9, thriving in cool, humus rich, consistently moist woodland soils. It prefers dappled shade, shelter from harsh afternoon sun, and steady moisture without waterlogging.

Our Seed Germination Experience

P. pleianthum produces recalcitrant, hydrophilic seeds, meaning they cannot dry out at any stage; viability drops sharply with desiccation. This species is considered intermediate to advanced from seed because of its sensitivity to drying and its typical requirement for warm stratification followed by cold.

Our 2024–25 sowing was a study in pleasant surprises. We harvested seed in November, cleaned it immediately, and sowed it at once in our unheated Zone 8 greenhouse. Instead of receiving the usual warm period before winter, these seeds went straight into the cold—and yet germination began in February, far earlier and more readily than expected. We suspect the seeds went through warm stratification in situ inside the moist seed pods.

This is a seed for a patient grower taking up to 4-5 years to reach blooming size.
