Manfreda undulata

Skill Level: Beginner

Manfreda undulata is a bold, sculptural succulent with low, wavy rosettes about 12–18 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide. It thrives in full sun, zones 7–10, and well drained, gritty soil, though it’s not overly choosy—ordinary garden loam works if drainage is reliable. It even thrives in containers. Unlike many agaves, it is not monocarpic, so it continues growing and blooming year after year, but don’t expect it to flower annually.

The flower spike is the real spectacle: a tall, airy, 3–5 foot inflorescence with narrow, curling, sweetly scented flowers that look almost kinetic in the slightest breeze. It’s one of the most dramatic blooms in the Agave alliance, especially surprising from such a compact plant.

Our Seed Germinating Experience

Seed is beginner friendly, sprouting at room temperature in 10–14 days. Freshness may matter: our seeds were less than six months old, and germination ran 80–90%. Seeds may be germination friendly, but they are slow to bulk up—taking years to form a flowering-sized rosette. About 60-70% of our cultivar ‘Chocolate Chip’ grew true to seed. This makes seed grown batches particularly interesting for collectors as each seedling carries the cultivar’s signature look with its own subtle individuality.
