Skill Level: Beginner–Intermediate
Gillenia trifoliata, or Bowman’s Root, is a refined woodland perennial native to eastern North America. It grows in open woods, even rocky or well drained slopes, and in humus rich soils, thriving in partial shade to morning sun. Hardy to about USDA Zone 4–8, it forms airy mounds of fine, red-tinged stems topped with starry white flowers supported by red petioles. In autumn it turns brilliant shades of red, orange, and coral, making it one of the most unexpectedly beautiful fall perennials.
Our Seed Germinating Experience:
Although often described as short-lived or even recalcitrant, we achieved ~50% germination from 18 month old seed. Fresh seed should perform even better. Cold stratify seeds at 3 °C for 4–6 weeks before moving to room temperature. Germination takes place in about 2 weeks.
Expect plants grown from seed to bloom in their second year of growth.
