Eucomis vandermerwei

Skill Level: Beginner

Eucomis vandermerwei, the diminutive “spotted leaf pineapple lily,” is a summer growing, winter dormant bulb native to the high rainfall, montane regions of western Mpumalanga, South Africa. Its compact rosette—typically only 5-8 inches tall—is composed of dark green leaves heavily blotched with deep maroon and edged in crisped, wavy margins, giving the plant a striking, almost reptilian texture. In midsummer to late it sends up a short, stout inflorescence of unusual maroon, faintly fetid flowers, each topped with the characteristic pineapple like tuft that defines the genus. This species thrives in fertile but sharply drained, gritty soils with full sun to bright exposure, making it an excellent choice for containers, rock gardens, and alpine troughs where its markings can be appreciated up close.

Our Seed Germinating Experience:

These seeds are surprisingly easy to germinate, taking less than 30 days at room temperature. Growing them into blooming-sized bulbs can take between 3 – 5 years, but the unusual leaves make them a design feature years before the flowers.
