Anemone leveillei

Skill Level: Intermediate

Anemone leveillei is one of the most quietly exquisite anemones for woodland and lightly shaded gardens. Its flowers are deceptively simple at first glance—white, open, and lightly nodding—but turn them slightly and the magic appears: each petal is washed with soft lilac on the reverse, creating a luminous halo when backlit. Deep violet purple anthers add a final note of contrast.

Mature plants typically reach 18–24 inches tall and 12–18 inches wide, forming a tidy clump of finely divided foliage. This species thrives in moist, humus rich, well drained soil and prefers partial shade, echoing the woodland edges and streamside meadows of its native range in western China. It is reliably hardy in Zones 5–8. In the garden, A. leveillei blooms from late spring into early summer, often bridging the gap between early bulbs and the first flush of summer perennials.

Our Seed Germination Experience

In our experience, Anemone leveillei seed requires intermediate skill, not because it is difficult, but because it benefits from a two stage temperature treatment. The seeds are sub recalcitrant—they do not tolerate long storage—and are best sown immediately upon receipt for highest viability.

We begin by sowing the seed at 18°C (65°F) for 30 days, during which a portion will germinate. Seeds that remain dormant respond well to a brief cold period: 30 days at 4°C (40°F), followed by a return to room temperature. This warm–cold–warm cycle mimics the natural conditions of its native habitat and reliably completes germination.

An equally effective alternative is to sow in fall in an unheated greenhouse and allow winter to provide the necessary cues. Germination typically occurs in early spring as temperatures rise.

Seedlings grow steadily through their first season, forming small but healthy crowns by autumn. From seed to bloom, A. leveillei most plants flower in their second or third year, depending on moisture, soil richness, and light.
